Posted on 03/03/2021

Vero Beach, FL, March 3, 2021– On March, 1st, Governor Ron DeSantis announced that he would expand coronavirus vaccine eligibility to people aged 50 or older who are K-12 school employees, sworn law enforcement officers or firefighters. Our school district, in partnership with the Florida Department of Health in Indian River County and Treasure Coast Community Health (TCCH), is proud to schedule a second vaccination clinic less than a week following the governor’s announcement, and extend the offer of COVID-19 vaccinations to all SDIRC employees 50 years and older. This vaccination opportunity has been coordinated by the Florida Department of Health in Indian River and is being supported by Treasure Coast Community Health. The vaccinations will be available to our eligible employees this Sunday, March 7, 2021, beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the Indian River County Fairgrounds located at 7955 58th Avenue; Vero Beach, FL., 32967.

At the end of January, Superintendent David K. Moore, Ed. D. contacted Governor DeSantis and the Florida Department of Health in Indian River County requesting that provisions be made to swiftly prioritize educators in opportunities to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Following Dr. Moore’s request, and with the support and coordination from the Florida Department of Health in Indian River County and Treasure Coast Community Health, our district was able to schedule 68 eligible employees 65 years and older and our school nurses and health aides to receive their first COVID-19 vaccination at the vaccination clinic on Saturday, February 6th at TCCH’s Gifford Health Center. This group of employees received their second dose of the vaccine on February 28th.

Currently, 901 employees 50 years and older, including those eligible employees who did not receive their vaccine at the first clinic, have been notified that they are eligible to receive their vaccination at the closed event taking place at the fairgrounds this Sunday, March 7. A follow-up closed vaccination event will be scheduled with the Florida Department of Health in Indian River County for this group of employees to receive their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Superintendent David K. Moore, Ed. D. stated, “We promised our employees we would continue to work with the Florida Department of Health in Indian River County to provide the option to receive the COVID-19 vaccination as the eligibility requirements are expanded by Governor DeSantis, and the Department of Health gains access to more vaccines. We will continue to work toward our goal, in partnership with the Florida Department of Health in Indian River County and TCCH, to offer the COVID-19 vaccine to all SDIRC employees.”
