The property, formally known as, “Jimmy Graves Sports Complex,” is named after Joe and Carole Graves’ son Jimmy, an avid soccer, football, and track athlete who passed away in 2016. The family said the Jimmy Graves Sports Complex was created to carry on Jimmy’s legacy and do something good for the community that helped raise their son. At our Board Workshop meeting on Tuesday, January 26th, Mr. Graves spoke about Jimmy, and revealed that his son, who was a member of the Gifford Middle School track team, had expressed his concerns over the conditions of the athletic practice areas that were available to the students.

After learning of the school district’s interest in the property, Mr. Graves said that his family was led to gift the property to the school district.

"The SDIRC’s vision of a community track aligned with the Graves’ family vision for the field,” stated Joe Graves. “We did not want to be mere bystanders, we wanted to be involved in making this happen in our community.”

School Board Chairman, Mr. Brian Barefoot, stated, “I would like to thank the Graves family for ensuring their son Jimmy’s legacy and for providing this opportunity for all members of the Indian River County Community.”

Superintendent of schools, Dr. David K. Moore, added, “This is a perfect example of how we can collectively provide to our community when we are willing to work together. As we take on ownership, we are moving forward to develop a design for the property and identify funding. This is a very exciting time to come together and support something that has been a long-standing priority for our community.”
