SDIRC CELEBRATES SCHOOL AND DISTRICT GRADES

Vero Beach, FL, July 12, 2019—The Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) has released school and district grades for the 2018-2019 school year.  Dr. Moxley, School District of Indian River County Interim Superintendent, said, “We are very pleased with our school grades, as we know it takes the work of many dedicated individuals and the persistence of our students to make this possible. While school grades are important, they are not the absolute indicator of the success, dedication, and talent that lies behind our schools' walls. Beachland Elementary, Citrus Elementary, Glendale Elementary, Rosewood Magnet, Sebastian River Middle School, and Vero Beach Elementary all increased their school grades.  Our district maintained its overall grade of a "B," and we will continue to work hard, while celebrating our success and overcoming obstacles to improve our individual school grades each year and meet our district goals.”

School Board Chairman, Laura Zorc, added, “I want to recognize and celebrate all the successes for this past 2018-19 school year for each and every school in Indian River County; including our traditional, magnets, charters, and private schools.  I have mixed emotions about the school grades because our students and schools are being given a label for the most part from a single State assessment.  As a parent of three school aged students, I think it’s more important for me to focus on the school that fits my children’s unique learning needs, not its letter grade.  However, this year we know we had campuses that soared off the charts and some that are having challenges. In preparing the budget for the next school year, we will need to make sure we fund additional supports these schools may need to ensure every child is given the opportunity to succeed.”

Six schools increased their letter grades, with one of those schools increasing two letter grades. Rosewood Magnet Elementary School increased their letter grade from a “B” to an “A.”  Citrus Elementary School, Glendale Elementary School, and Sebastian River Middle School increased from a “C” to a “B.”  Vero Beach Elementary increased their “D” to a “C,” and Beachland Elementary School increased from a “C” to an “A.”

Mrs. Cassandra Flores, Principal at Rosewood Magnet School, stated, “We are so proud and thrilled to see the hard work of all of our students, teachers, and families shine through in this year's school grade.  We know they all give their very best every day and this is an opportunity to celebrate their efforts.  Way to go, Panthers!”

Mrs. Kim Garcia, Principal at Citrus Elementary School, stated, “The staff and students at Citrus Elementary worked so diligently this year, and I could not be more proud of the achievement of increasing a letter grade and making a ‘B’ status! Over the past two years, we have increased our overall score by 113 points and have improved not only in proficiency but in learning gains in ELA, Math, and Science. I can say without hesitation, that the staff at Citrus is the hardest working, most dedicated group of individuals who are always looking out for the well-being of all of our children, and I am blessed to be part of this unbelievable group. Citrus truly is a GREAT PLACE TO BEE! Whoop, Whoop!”

Mr. Adam Faust, Principal at Glendale Elementary School, stated, “I am so proud to be part of such an amazing school family here at Glendale! The Glendale Teachers and Staff do more than is expected every day to ensure our students have everything they need for success! I am also grateful to our incredible students and families who have embraced our school mission of helping the rest and realizing hard work matters! I love this place and look forward to helping lead our students, families, teachers and staff towards excellence in the 2019-2020 school yearGo, Gators!”

Mr. Todd Racine, Principal at Sebastian River Middle School, stated, “Congratulations to the students and staff at Sebastian River Middle School for earning the grade of ‘B’ from the FLDOE.  Collaboration, Progress Monitoring, and our entire staff’s relentless pursuit to help students reach their potential both academically and socially were the keys to this year's success.  I also want to mention the super support of our families, business partners, PTA, and our School Advisory Council.”

Mrs. Cynthia Emerson, Principal at Vero Beach Elementary, stated, “We are so proud of the progress our tribe has made at Vero Beach Elementary.  Our students, teachers, and staff have poured their hearts into making this transformation continue.  We are so excited to see the growth, but we are even more empowered to continue our journey to an ‘A!’  We can’t stop and we won’t stop!”

Dr. Colleen Lord, Principal at Beachland Elementary School, stated, “Beachland’s school grade was definitely a team effort!  It starts with the teachers, and their drive for every student to succeed, whether it is additional support or challenging them with extended lessons.  Our staff ensured we had a learning community where every student could excel, and the parents, district, and community support was critical to the success of the students.  I am so proud of the efforts of the students and the entire Beachland team.  They have always been an excellent school, and this grade indicates the direction we will continue to head in the coming years.”

Five schools received a lower letter grade.  North County Charter School and St. Peter’s Academy dropped from an “A” to a “B.”  Sebastian Elementary School, Sebastian River High School, and Treasure Coast Elementary School dropped from a “B” to a “C.”

All other schools maintained their previous year’s letter grade. The School Grades, district grades, and school improvement ratings, along with the guides to calculations, can be found at:
