End-of-Year Update: School District of Indian River County

"Although we are apart, more than ever, we are SDIRC Stronger Together"

Vero Beach, FL, June 10, 2020– The 2019-2020 school year has presented our district with challenges as well as opportunities. When COVID-19 forced the closure of school campuses and buildings, our district took immediate action, developing innovative practices to overcome obstacles in our path. Instead of allowing our new reality to become a barrier that would delay the mission of our district, we became #SDIRCStrongerTogether pushing forward to make decisions that were “Best By Kids.” The opportunities that were presented during this time of uncertainty allowed for growth throughout our district and the development of new and innovative methodologies in every area. We set our standards high and served as an example to school districts and communities across the nation as our response to COVID-19 was frequently imitated, however, never duplicated. We thank our students, families, and community for the support we have received throughout this time, including the flexibility, persistence, and at times, grace, as we all adapted to changes in our routines and environment. Now that we have concluded a unique, yet highly successful school year for all, we are proud to share our accomplishments. Please see the highlights below along with the full SDIRC Annual Update and message from Superintendent David K. Moore, Ed.D., below.

  • We continued our work of demanding equity in our school district, including, completing revisions and obtaining feedback from our Equity Committee and local NAACP members, resulting in a Board approved Equity Plan.
  • Established an African American Achievement Council and expectations for development and initiation of school-based implementation plans, and formalized progress monitoring and reporting methods for the African American Achievement Plan.
  • Successfully negotiated a new teacher contract, Terminal Pay Agreement, and health insurance rates with our IRCEA Teachers’ Union.
  • Completed “Phase 1” of district realignment and restructuring, increasing services and supports for our students and staff, improving customer service, re-distributing job responsibilities to ensure that all areas of work are led with fidelity, and communicating an overall “students first” perspective.
  • Engaged our SDIRC families and community members both virtually and in-person with weekly Facebook Live sessions, focus groups, think tanks, advisory councils, social media posts and updates, and surveys to elicit feedback from stakeholders to help guide decision-making and planning processes for our district.
  • Established leadership and instructional coaching academies to enhance the capacity and expertise of those currently serving in an administrator role, as well as those aspiring to become principals, assistant principals, or instructional coaches.
