100% of our traditional public schools were awarded one or both of these designations.

Vero Beach, FL, September 6, 2018-The School District of Indian River County is proud to announce the schools who received the Golden and Silver School Awards from the Florida Department of Education. The Florida Department of Education presents The Golden and Silver School Awards to recognize exemplary programs, which promote parent and community involvement in education.

"The Golden and Silver School Awards serve as recognition of the incredible partnerships we have developed with so many organizations and individuals within our community," said SDIRC Superintendent, Dr. Mark Rendell. "If you visit any of our schools, you will see numerous people volunteering their time to assist our teachers and support our students. We are extremely fortunate and grateful."

The Golden School Award recognizes elementary, secondary, and adult schools that meet certain criteria. Among the criteria for a Golden School Award are the following:

  • The total number of hours of volunteer service equals twice the number of students enrolled in the school. Any volunteer activity that contributes to student improvement may be counted (e.g., fundraising).
  • A school volunteer coordinator is designated for recruitment, placement, training, and supervision of school volunteers.

The following schools received the Golden School Award:

  • Beachland Elementary
  • Citrus Elementary
  • Dodgertown Elementary
  • Fellsmere Elementary
  • Gifford Middle School

Thank you to our volunteers for their service hours on behalf of our learning organization!"

The Silver School Award is presented to recognize secondary schools that meet certain criteria.

  • The composite student volunteer hours must equal at least one half the total number of students (FTE count) in the sending school (i.e., 2,000 students = 1,000 volunteer hours.)
  • The sending school must have a school volunteer coordinator who provides coordination of the program, placement of students, orientation/training for the staff, student/program evaluation, and student volunteer supervision.

The following schools received the Silver School Award:

  • Imagine of South Vero Charter School
  • Sebastian River High School
  • Sebastian River Middle School
  • Storm Grove Middle School
  • Vero Beach High School

Vero Beach High School, Sebastian River High School, Storm Grove Middle School, and Imagine of South Vero Charter School all received both Golden and Silver School designations.

Vero Beach High School Principal, Shawn O'Keefe, said, "On behalf of VBHS and our school community, we are very thankful for the outpouring of parent and community support from volunteerism that our school receives each school year, that directly benefits our students."

"Storm Grove is thrilled to receive both the Silver School and Golden School Award this year," said Storm Grove Middle School Principal, Ann Bieber. "Storm Grove has amazing parents, students, teachers, and community partners who support our school and community through countless volunteer hours. These recognitions would not be possible without that support."
