FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 24, 2019

Vero Beach, FL, May 24, 2019– Individual Florida Standards Assessments for 3rd grade ELA (English Language Arts/Reading), were released today by the Florida Department of Education. Indian River County has the highest percentage of students scoring a level 3 or higher among all school districts on the Treasure Coast, including, Martin, St. Lucie, and Okeechobee Counties. The School District of Indian River County (SDIRC) is proud to recognize our students, teachers, and staff members for their hard work and dedication that made these achievements possible.

SDIRC Superintendent, Dr. Mark Rendell, stated, “This is fantastic news for our community. The ability to read proficiently in 3rd grade lays the foundation for literacy and opens the door to all other learning. We have focused our efforts and directed a lot of resources to the primary grades, and it is certainly paying off. The 4-point increase this past year, and the 7-point increase since 2015, are impressive. We have identified the instructional practices that yield these increases in learning, and I am sure our scores will continue to climb.”

Laura Zorc, SDIRC School Board Chairman, added, “It is imperative for children to be proficient in reading by the end of third grade. Kindergarten through 3rd grade students ‘learn to read,’ and 4th through 12th students ‘read to learn.’ The ability to read is a key indicator of a student’s ability to succeed. We are celebrating the success of our students, teachers, and staff today. They all have worked hard this year and their efforts show. Even though one test score is not the be all end all in understanding a student’s growth throughout the school year, it is one of many gauges we analyze.”
