Zachary Hessler, Gifford Middle School student, named "America's Top Young Scientist" Finalist

Vero Beach, FL, June 28, 2018-Discovery Education and 3M have selected Gifford Middle School student, Zachary Hessler, as one of the ten finalists from across America to be named America's Top Young Scientist. The annual competition invites students to submit short videos that describe a new invention or idea that could solve or impact an everyday problem. Zachary developed a method using light technology to reduce noise pollution. Zachary, and nine other young scientists, were selected over hundreds of others. "These young ladies and gentlemen were selected based on their science acumen, innovative thinking, and exceptional communication skills, as demonstrated in their entry videos." Please see the attached press release from Discovery Education and 3M highlighting Zach's accomplishments and the "Young Scientist Challenge."

Prior to this recognition, Zachary's project was named "Toyota of Vero Beach Best of Show Junior" at the Regional Science and Engineering Fair held at Gifford Middle School, in partnership with the Education Foundation of Indian River County. Out of 218 secondary projects, Zachary won first place in his category (Physics) and Best of Show in the Junior Division (middle school). He has been nominated for the Broadcom Masters, a premier science and engineering competition for middle school students, and received a bid for the State Science Fair for the past two years. At the State Science Fair this year, he finished second in the State in Physics, following his first-place finish in Physics, last year.

Zachary said, "My journey from the Gifford Middle Science Fair to a top ten finalist in the Discovery 3M Young Scientist Challenge has been an exciting and challenging ride. I am looking forward to the opportunity to work with a 3M scientist this summer and turn my project into a product that makes the world a better place."
