VBHS Band Invited To The United Kingdom For 2019 New Year’s Day Parade

Vero Beach, FL, April 5, 2018—The School District of Indian River County (SDIRC) is pleased to announce that the Vero Beach High School Band (VBHS) has been invited to the United Kingdom to March in the 2019 New Year’s Day Parade. On Monday, April 9th, at 9:00 a.m., Cllr Steve Summers, Former Lord Mayor of the City of Westminster, Mr. Robert Bone, Executive Director of the London New Year's Day Parade, and Mr. Jonathan Whaley, Director of International Participation, will be visiting the Vero Beach High School Performing Arts Center to present the official invitation to perform in the parade. The VBHS Symphony Band will be performing in their honor.

Each year in the spring, The Lord Mayoralty decides upon a select number of groups that it wishes to visit in the United States of America in connection with London’s New Year’s Day Parade and Festival. The visit from the Lord Mayoralty is designed either to inspire and reconfirm the importance of the invitation to groups already invited, or to render invitations to participate in future events.

The Vero Beach High School Band will be marching in the 2019 New Year Day Parade in London with a route winding through Piccadilly Circus, Regent Street, Trafalgar Square, and Whitehall. The parade ends near the Palace of Westminster, Big Ben, and Westminster Abbey. With over 500,000 people in attendance and 3 million TV viewers worldwide, this performance will have the largest audience in Vero Beach High School Band history.

VBHS Director of Bands, Page Howell, stated, “We are very excited to have the Lord Mayor of Westminster and parade officials on our campus and equally excited about marching in the New Year’s Day Parade in London. This is a tremendous honor and opportunity for our students, our school and our community!”

SDIRC Superintendent, Dr. Mark Rendell, said, “The invitation to perform is certainly recognition of the high quality of the Vero Beach High School Band. That is a testament to the high standards and expectations that have been in place for several years. I am confident that our students and staff will represent our community well and make the most of this once in a lifetime experience.”

SDIRC School Board Chairman, Shawn Frost, added, “We are proud to receive the dignitaries and honored to accept the invitation. They won't be sorry that they are giving our band students this prestigious opportunity. Our student musicians will most certainly astound their audiences. This is the payoff for supporting the arts in our schools and we couldn't be more thrilled.”

In order to send all eligible students, the band is actively fundraising. The price of the trip is all-inclusive, including guided educational tours of historical London and its world-renowned sites; giving our students a once in a lifetime experience.
