Vero Beach, FL, August 30, 2017– The School District of Indian River County will be contributing to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts in a variety of ways throughout the district. Superintendent Mark Rendell has authorized a special “Casual for a Cause” day on Thursday, September 7, and all proceeds will be donated to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts in Texas and Louisiana.

Superintendent, Dr. Rendell stated, “We want to show our support for the citizens of Texas and Louisiana that have been impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. Unfortunately, we are all too familiar with the challenges associated with the devastating effects of a major hurricane.”

Sebastian River High School’s (SRHS) Red Kettle Club is collecting money for the Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief at Friday’s home football game on September 1. The Red Kettle Club of SRHS is chartered through the Salvation Army. Proceeds will allow the Salvation Army to purchase supplies, as needed. Red Kettles will be placed at the entryway of Shark Stadium.

Osceola and Rosewood Magnet Schools have teamed up to collect supplies to send to Texas over the weekend. Items such as pre-packaged granola bars, dog food, cat food, blankets, towels, socks, and diapers will be collected and sent with a local church to be sent to families now staying in shelters throughout Texas. Supplies will be collected at Open House Thursday night and sent to Texas over the weekend. Hurricane relief supplies can also be brought to either school’s front office no later than Friday, September 1.

Vero Beach Elementary (VBE) will be participating in the district “Casual for a Cause” day and sending the proceeds to their “adopted” Kirk Elementary School, in Houston Texas.

Principal Cindy Emerson added, “I was fortunate enough to connect with the Principal of Kirk Elementary School thorough an online principal’s network that I am a member of. After speaking with her daily, I really feel like we are just helping out a friend. I’m glad we are able to support their school in some way.”

Imagine of South Vero is having their “Casual for a Cause” day on Friday, September 1. Students are encouraged to wear jeans and a red, white, or blue t-shirt in support of Texas. They are also “adopting” the Houston Independent School District to receive the proceeds from their “Casual for a Cause” efforts.

Principal Chris Rock stated, “Imagine South Vero realizes that many schools have been flooded or sustained damaged in the Houston area from Hurricane Harvey. Much of the work and effort that all teachers of these schools have put into their classrooms at the beginning of the school year is now lost. We also realize that when these teachers do return, they will most likely attend makeshift classrooms until their school can be reopened. Our effort will hopefully provide teachers much needed supplies and support during this transition.”

Treasure Coast Elementary PTA will be collecting hurricane relief items during their Open House on Thursday evening, August 31, and bringing them to Sotheby International Realty, which is a local collection site. Items may also be dropped off at the front office no later than Friday, September 1.

We would like to encourage our community to join us in assisting in the Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. If not through our school district, then in a way that is appropriate for your family.
