EIGHTEEN INDIAN RIVER COUNTY SCHOOLS NAMED FIVE-STAR SCHOOLS

Vero Beach, FL, January 16, 2018 - Florida Department of Education has recognized eighteen School District of Indian River County Schools (SDIRC) as Five-Star Schools. These schools are recognized for being committed to incorporating family and community members into the school environment to enhance student learning. Please see the FLDOE press release below for further information.

Dr. Mark Rendell, SDIRC Superintendent, said, “The Five Star School Award signifies a strong partnership between public schools and their community. For so many of our schools to earn the award is a testament to the incredible support that we receive from individuals and organizations in our community. This certainly is something for everyone to celebrate.”

Laura Zorc, SDIRC School Board Chairman, added, “When families are involved in their children’s learning both at home and at school, their children do better in school. Students with involved parents or other caregivers earn higher grades and test scores, have better social skills, show improved behavior, and lower absenteeism. I commend all these schools for showing evidence of exemplary family involvement and engagement. Student success is the mission and it is great to see everyone working together as a team to make this a reality.”

Vero Beach High School (VBHS) Principal, Shawn O’Keefe, said, “VBHS is ‘Vero Proud’ to once again be selected as a Five Star School by the Commissioner’s Community Involvement Council. We have exemplary community involvement at Vero High School with participatory parents, volunteers, and business partners. Our students are active in the community all school year long, as they volunteer for service projects contributing to community improvements.”

I am so pleased that Gifford Middle School has received the recognition of being a Five Star School,” said Principal Tosha Jones. “This honor was achieved only because of the hard work and dedication of our students, staff, and the overwhelming support of our parents and community sponsors. This is a great example of our school theme: ‘Together We Make our School a Success.’ I look forward to many years as a Five Star School.”

Diane Fannin, Principal of Indian River Academy (IRA), stated, “We are thrilled to receive an award that exemplifies the strong partnerships we value with our community! Our community's commitment to support IRA has created such a strong sense of unity among all of the stakeholders. The collaboration among ALL of us is the most critical factor to the lives and education of our scholars!”

Ramon Echeverria, Principal of Fellsmere Elementary School, said, “We are so proud to receive this award on behalf of our entire school community. Working with our community allows our students and staff to reach new levels, both socially and academically, further allowing them to develop into the types of citizens any community would be proud of. Educating our youth is truly a team effort and this award affirms that dedication to our most precious resource - our students.”
